THE NATIONAL - FOLLOWING ALEXANDER MCQUEEN’S LEAD, LUXURY HOUSES EMBRACE THE SCARF

It all started in 2006, with Alexander McQueen's skull scarf. The last few years have seen this accessory morph from a patterned or knitted wrap or veil into something of a blank canvas for illustrators and textile artists. The development of digital printing has helped, of course, enabling designers to execute some incredible work, from Professor Richard Weston's beautiful magnified minerals on silk satin to Erdem's glorious floral prints. The result has been an explosion of new talents, with brands such as Silken Favours and Athena Procopiou that specialise in creating art that is wearable and can update an outfit, summer or winter. One of the most exciting brands to appear recently is the New York trio We Are Owls. Launching in 2010, cousins Emily and Ling Chen and their friend Connie Liu have created a series of beautiful pieces with a dark, fantastical, fairy-tale aesthetic to their exquisitely rendered...

TIMEOUT NEW YORK - DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT

Who they are: By naming their scarf label after everyone’s favorite creature of the night, cousins Emily and Ling Chen, along with childhood pal Connie Lui, gave a clever nod to the fact that the line was born in the evening hours, after their day job had ended and the girls convened to plot their future business. The trio approaches We Are Owls, which debuted last January, as a collaborative effort: Parsons grad Ling sketches the whimsical patterns, while creative director Connie manages the business end and PR maven Emily’s background in luxury-buying gives her a trendspotting eye. About the line: When asked about her worldly inspiration, which ranges from Dia de los Muertos sugar skulls to the Tibetan Book of the Dead, Ling credits her NYC pedigree. “New York City is my home,” she says. “I have been exposed to so many diverse cultures, global influence just comes naturally.”...

HUFFINGTON POST - THE NECESSITY OF SCARVES

It's winter. How do you plan on arming yourself? Puffy coat, Uggs and a matching scarf and hat? Oh dear God, please, no. Luckily the innovative young women over at We Are Owls have decided to throw you a bone, rendering your excuses for an undecorated neck worthless. In a quest to redefine the way we look at neckware, creators Connie Lui, Ling Chen and Emily Chen maintain that the scarf "should not just function as a piece to keep you warm but should also make a statement, like the perfect jewelry or bag that makes the outfit, it completes the look." Mihal Freinquel: Why the Owl? Connie Lui: We've always been fascinated by the beauty and mysterious qualities of the Owl. We relate ourselves to them as they are creatures of the night. The three of us have day jobs and we find ourselves gathering after work at night...

STYLECASTER - HOW TO TIE A SCARF IN 5 DIFFERENT WAYS

“The concept of tying a scarf seems like such a simple task, but actually faced with styling the winter accessory, it can be difficult to get it right — not to mention to stay that way between the time you leave your apartment and get to work in the morning. Necessity or not, there’s no excuse for wearing your scarf in a disheveled sort of way. Enough of this French women are way chicer than American stereotype — if they can style their scarves with effortless appeal every single day of their lives, then so can I. To prove this point, I went to the ladies behind my new favorite scarf brand, We Are Owls, just in time before the chilly weather hit. Connie Lui, Emily Chen and Ling Chen, all friends and co-founders of the brand (Emily and Ling are also cousins) started the concept for We Are...

REFINERY29 - THE BEST PRINTED SCARVES ON THE MARKET

“We're not ill-wishing warm-weather days, but here at the office we can't stop dreaming about our fall wardrobes. With September issues as far as the eye can see, it’s hard not to circle trenches, sweaters, and boots that we want in heavy autumn rotation. But even if the recession has dampened your fiscal fashion ambition, we’ve got a suggestion that will update your look in a flash all fall long. The tip? New line, We Are Owls, a range of 100% cashmere, printed scarves that go with just about everything. The kids behind the label, cousins Ling and Emily Chen and their friend Connie Lui, originally met at NYC’s LaGuardia High School and stayed friends throughout their tenure at design school. Once the real-world hit them, they momentarily parted ways, all the while surreptitiously meeting up at night after work in the L.E.S. studio apartment they all shared to plot...

    POSHGLAM - LINE TO WATCH

“As Fall approaches, nothing is more essential than the perfect scarf. Neutral colors always work best, but it is more fun to buy one in a funky print that will not only serve its purpose of keeping your neck warm, but also brighten your spirits as the days grow increasingly colder. We Are Owls is a new scarf line that combines function with a playful spirit. The line’s first collection is debuting for Fall 2010, but the designs and prints are far from amateur. Ling Chen is the mind behind the company. She is a native New Yorker and started honing her skills in Fashion Design and Illustration at the world-renowned Parsons School of Design. The line’s name comes from her obsession with owls: the way they visualize the world and their nocturnal and mysterious, yet beautiful nature. The scarves echo something dark and supernatural with skull and skeleton motifs, but...

    WWD - NIGHT MOVES

For cousins Ling and Emily Chen, and their close friend Connie Lui, their new venture — a scarf collection called We Are Owls — is the culmination of years of brainstorming. Close friends since they attended Manhattan’s LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts, the threesome, each 31, talked about collaborating on an art project throughout high school. “We just never knew what it was,” Emily says... As the designers explained: “Our scarves should not just function as a piece to keep you warm, but should also make a statement, like the perfect jewelry or bag that makes the outfit.” —WWD
